{"id":16726,"date":"2022-12-31T10:56:17","date_gmt":"2022-12-31T15:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ohiopeacecouncil.org\/?p=16726"},"modified":"2022-12-31T10:56:17","modified_gmt":"2022-12-31T15:56:17","slug":"international-court-of-justice-called-to-investigate-israeli-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ohiopeacecouncil.org\/?p=16726","title":{"rendered":"International Court of Justice called to Investigate Israeli Crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Palestinians have welcomed a vote by the United Nations General Assembly, which calls on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to give an opinion on the legal consequences of\u00a0the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israeli \u201cannexation\u201d and the \u201clegal status of the occupation\u201d of Palestinian territories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time has come for Israel to be subject to law, and to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against our people,\u201d Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Palestinian official Hussein al-Sheikh said on Twitter that Friday&#8217;s vote \u201creflects the victory of Palestinian diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resolution promoted by Palestinians passed by a vote of 87 in favor, 26 against, with 53 abstentions. Russia and China voted in favor of the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Israel, the US and 24 other members \u2013 including the United Kingdom and Germany \u2013 voted against the resolution, while France was among the 53 nations that abstained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2022\/12\/31\/695444\/Palestine-Israel-United-Nations-General-Assembly-International-Court-of-Justice-occupation\">UN asks International Court of Justice for legal opinion on Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The resolution\u00a0is titled \u201cIsraeli practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories\u201d and calls on the Hague-based ICJ to \u201crender urgently an advisory opinion\u201d on Israel\u2019s \u201cprolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of Palestinian territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also calls for an investigation into Israeli measures \u201caimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of al-Quds\u201d and says Israel has adopted \u201cdiscriminatory legislation and measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resolution demands the court weigh in on the conflict in accordance with international law and the UN charter.<\/p>\n<p>Palestine\u2019s UN ambassador Riyad Mansour noted that the vote came one day after the swearing-in of a new far-right Israeli cabinet led by hawkish prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he said promises an expansion of\u00a0illegal settlements\u00a0and will accelerate \u201ccolonial and racist policies\u201d towards Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2022\/12\/30\/695427\/Palestinian-martyr-Ammar-Mefleh-buried-in-hometown\">Funeral after 28 days: Palestinian killed at point-blank buried in hometown<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of\u00a0the West Bank and East al-Quds.<\/p>\n<p>All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. The UN Security Council has condemned Israel\u2019s settlement activities in the occupied territories in several resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future independent state with East al-Quds as its capital.<\/p>\n<p>The last round of Israeli-Palestinian talks collapsed in 2014.
